Reversing Camera for Motorhomes: Which One to Choose?

Motorhome, camper van, van… these vehicles offer comfort and freedom, but also come with significant visibility constraints, both at the rear and on the sides of the vehicle during manoeuvres.

A reversing camera helps make parking, reversing and navigating tight spaces safer. But between wired cameras, wireless cameras or car-stereo integration, it's not always easy to choose the most suitable solution.

In this article, we'll look at the different options to help you choose a system suited to your needs.

Why Install a Reversing Camera on a Motorhome?

Motorhomes, camper vans and vans are bulky, long and often expensive vehicles. Their size makes every manoeuvre trickier, particularly in campsites, car parks or in the middle of a city.

In these situations, the main problem isn't just rear visibility, but overall visibility around the vehicle. Blind spots can affect the rear, the sides, but also low areas close to the vehicle.

Without assistance, this often forces you into impractical actions: getting out of the vehicle to check, opening the window to guide the trajectory, or asking a passenger for help.

Manoeuvring Independently

Parking or reversing a motorhome often requires several adjustments. A reversing camera lets you carry out these manoeuvres alone, with a direct view of the surroundings around the vehicle.

Multiple Blind Spots

Invisible areas aren't limited to the rear: posts, low vehicles, cyclists or side obstacles can disappear from view from the driving position.

Vehicle Protection

A motorhome represents a significant investment. Better visibility helps limit manoeuvring errors and avoid costly collisions, even at low speed.

Wired Reversing Camera

A wired reversing camera relies on a direct connection between the camera and the monitor installed in the vehicle's cab. The image is transmitted continuously via a dedicated cable between the rear of the vehicle and the driving position. It's a solution suited to vehicles that allow for cable routing, particularly motorhomes, camper vans and utility vehicles.

A discreet, compact, low-profile reversing camera for your motorhome, van

Discreet Compact Camera

A compact-format camera designed to integrate easily onto different types of vehicles. It can be installed in a high position at the rear of the vehicle or directly as a number-plate camera depending on the configuration, allowing it to adapt to many vans, motorhomes and utility vehicles. Its small size makes for discreet integration, without altering the vehicle's appearance.

White bracket-mounted reversing camera for motorhomes, vans

Camera with Bracket Mount

A camera fitted with an adjustable external bracket, allowing precise adjustment of the viewing angle depending on the installation. This format is suited to configurations where the mounting location varies according to the vehicle's structure or fittings, making it easy to fine-tune the image framing. Its white finish allows for harmonious integration on leisure and utility vehicles.

ABS Reinforced Camera

A camera mounted on a bracket with a protective ABS shell, providing extra protection against external stresses (vibrations, harsh weather, regular use). It's suited to vehicles used frequently on the road or while travelling, where the equipment is exposed to varied conditions.

A dual-optic reversing camera for rear visibility and a bumper view for your motorhome, van

Dual-Optic Camera

A solution fitted with two independent lenses that can be adjusted to suit your needs. One can be aimed at the distant rear area, while the other covers the area close to the vehicle, such as the bumper. This system helps anticipate obstacles at different distances during manoeuvres, particularly useful on vehicles with significant overhang or reduced rear visibility.

ID.CAM rear-view or front 170° wide-angle reversing camera

170° Wide-Angle Camera

A 170° wide-angle camera offering an expanded field of view to improve awareness of the surroundings during manoeuvres: leaving a parking space, slow-moving traffic, tight spaces. It widens the visible area around the vehicle and in its immediate vicinity, making it easier to spot obstacles in low-speed driving situations or in confined spaces.

You can also consider other kits or packs not specific to motorhomes, depending on your needs or the desired look for your vehicle (colour, integration, design).

Reversing Camera Connected to a Car Stereo (RCA Connection)

If your vehicle is fitted with a double-DIN car stereo, it's possible to connect a reversing camera to it via an RCA video input.

This type of installation lets you use the screen already present in the vehicle, without adding an extra monitor.

Most recent car stereos have this input, but it's important to check compatibility depending on the model.

We offer compact reversing cameras with RCA connectivity, designed to suit aftermarket installations:

  • a round clip-on HD camera for a high-definition image
  • a compact camera compatible with HD and CVBS, to suit older or non-HD car stereos

Wireless Reversing Camera for Motorhomes

The wireless reversing camera is a solution used when routing a cable between the camera and the screen is difficult or impossible.

It transmits the image without a direct wired connection, which can simplify certain installations depending on the vehicle's configuration.

Wireless is particularly well suited to motorhomes and leisure vehicles, where the absence of a metal structure favours stable signal transmission. Conversely, on vans and utility vehicles, the metal bodywork acts as a barrier (Faraday cage effect) that can severely limit the range and reliability of the signal. For these vehicles, a wired solution is generally more appropriate.

We offer two ranges of wireless cameras, suited to different uses and offering different features.

Plug-and-play wireless rear-view reversing camera kit, cigarette lighter power, quick installation

Eco Range

The Eco range offers a wireless reversing camera solution with the monitor powered via the cigarette lighter socket. It allows for quick installation, while providing a useful rear view for everyday manoeuvres: parking, reversing or driving in tight spaces.

Display: screen splittable into 4 views only.

Wireless rear-view reversing camera kit with dashcam-style screen recording

Pro Range

The Pro range offers a more complete solution with dedicated monitor power and an SD card recording function (dashcam-style). This feature is particularly useful on leisure vehicles: it lets you keep a video record of your journeys and have evidence in the event of an incident or dispute.

Display: screen splittable into 2, 3 or 4 views.

Quick Installation

The main advantage of the wireless system is that it limits the need to route video cables between the camera and the monitor. This allows for a faster, less intrusive installation on the vehicle, particularly on motorhomes and camper vans where preserving the integrity of the interior fittings is important.

Expandable System

Each kit can be extended with an additional camera to adapt the view to the vehicle's needs. This makes it possible to extend visibility around the motorhome or van, particularly at the rear, on the sides, or when using a towbar or towed equipment.

FAQ Expand

Which Reversing Camera Should I Choose for a Motorhome?Expand
The choice mainly depends on the vehicle's configuration and the intended use. A wired camera is suitable when you want an installation with a direct connection between the camera and the monitor. A wireless camera can be considered when routing a video cable is difficult or not desired, bearing in mind the vehicle's structure, which can affect signal transmission depending on the materials and installation environment.
Wired or Wireless Reversing Camera: Which One to Choose?Expand
The choice mainly depends on your use and your vehicle (you can read the article "Wired or wireless camera, which one to choose?" by clicking here.). A wired camera is suited to fixed installations with a direct connection between the camera and the screen, while a wireless camera may be preferred when cable routing is complex.
Is a Reversing Camera Enough on a Motorhome?Expand
A reversing camera greatly improves rear visibility and makes manoeuvring easier. However, on long or tall vehicles, certain areas around the vehicle remain out of view. In this case, a multi-camera solution or a 360° kit can offer a more complete view.
Can a Reversing Camera Be Installed on Any Motorhome or Van?Expand
